Castles and wild horses
Did you know that there are wild horses along Tagus river?
If you're tired of big cities and want to see the real countryside, this tour is for you.
Almourol castle was built on the top of a small island, in the 12th century by the Templar knights. Aimed to stablish the border of Portugal in the river (900 years ago), was soon left with no use. Today you can only reach it by boat and you won’t have to fight for a seat in it as few people know about this magical castle.
After climbing to the highest tower or simply walking through the island, we will drive through the country side and have lunch in a local restaurant by the river.
In the afternoon, we will relax in a small river cruise through inner areas of Tagus River, visiting islands only accessible by boat. One of them is “the island of the horses” where wild horses and birds can be seen. You’ll also learn about the “Avieiros”, a long gone nomadic fishing community. If you enjoy horseback riding we can do it instead of the river cruise. Just let us know once you book the tour.
On the way back to Lisbon we’ll take a national road, giving you the chance to see more wild animals or buy fruit directly from the farmers.

It can be very sunny in the summer: a hat and sunscreen can be handy.
